Before hundreds of thousands of people packed into the square at Saint Peter's Basilica, the late Pope John Paul II was beatified Sunday, May 1, 2011, in a ceremony that declared him "blessed".

The huge throng erupted in applause when Pope Benedict XVI, recited the words that elevated his predecessor, whose massive portrait was then unveiled over the doorway of the basilica.

On September 30, 2013, the Vatican announced that Popes John XXIII and John Paul II would be declared saints in April, 2014. The announcement came after Pope Francis met with cardinals to discuss the planned canonizations of two of his predecessors. The ceremony took place on April 27th. It was the first time two popes were canonized at the same ceremony.
