Richard Chartrand is the third generation of his family to be involved in the design and execution of church furnishings. His grandfather, Michel Chartrand, founded the firm of Librairie Saint-Michel, Inc., in Boston in 1910. The firm grew over the years from its beginnings specializing in French religious books. In time, the company represented the finest European craftsmen working in the ecclesiastical fields. In 1962, under the direction of Michel's son, Jules, the name was changed to Saint Michel Liturgical Arts, Inc. to more closely reflect the nature of their business. For over forty years, Richard has created works in marble, wood, bronze, mosaic and stained glass for churches throughout the United States. Now, at Chartrand Design, he specializes in these crafts that built his family's reputation over one-hundred years for the finest quality for worship.
